When your computer is connected to the Internet, it is exposed to viruses, the threat of infiltration and the possibility of other kinds of accidental or malicious harm. Cyber security is the method used to protect your computer and network from such possible attacks through cyberspace. In the US, October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division.
The National Cyber Security Division's website offers these and other tips for reducing your computer's vulnerability to outside abuse:
● Use automatically updating security tools, including anti-spyware, firewall and anti-virus software
● Update web browser, operating system and other software as updates become available
● Use long and complicated passwords that are difficult to guess
● Be careful what information you give out and check to see that you're giving it to reliable sites
